Who can study abroad for a semester or a year?

All college students are encouraged to study abroad! No matter what your academic major, or your career goals, study abroad is relevant to all students.

In order to study abroad for a semester or year, a student must:

Have a minimum GPA of 2.6 and be in good standing.  Note that programs require a higher GPA.

Have completed at least one semester of study at FMU.

Enroll full-time while abroad.

In order to study abroad during the summer, a student must:

Have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and be in good standing.

Have at least sophomore standing when commencing the program.

How much does it cost to study abroad?

The short answer is, it varies!  Just like the cost of living is different in each U.S. cities, the cost of living in various cities overseas is different too.  For example, if you study abroad in Peru, it will be about half the cost of a program in England.  Choose your destination wisely, and consider locations you may not have known about previously!  These hidden gems often turn out to offer the best value and create the best memories.

What if studying abroad is more expensive than attending FMU?

If the cost of attendance at your study abroad program is greater than the cost of attendance for a semester at FMU, you may be eligible to apply for additional student loans.  The Financial Aid office will need a Cost of Attendance sheet in order to determine your eligibility.

How will I earn academic credit during a study abroad?

Study abroad allows you to earn academic credit at a university overseas.  Before you apply to any study abroad program, you will meet with your faculty advisor.  With pre-approval, the courses that you take overseas will transfer back to FMU.  Students who are participating in faculty-led programs will be enrolled directly in FMU credit.

How will grades transfer back to FMU?

Courses taken overseas will be considered as letter grades.  Grades will appear on your FMU transcript and will be factored into your overall GPA.

When should I study abroad?

It is common for students to study abroad in their sophomore or junior years.  With planning, you can also study abroad during your senior year.  You can study abroad during the summer, or during fall/spring semesters.

Can I study abroad in a country where the official language is not English?

Yes.  Most of the approved programs offer a full curriculum in English. Depending on the program, students may be required to take at least one host-country language course.

Where will I live when I am overseas?

Our programs offer three different housing options: homestays with a host family, shared apartments, and university residence halls.
